Family Portrait Wall Art & Albums in Des Moines: Why Your Photos Belong Off the Hard Drive
Hard drives corrupt and phones break. See how a Des Moines area family portrait session ends with wall art, an album, and installation in your home.
I hear the same thing from moms all the time.
“I know we have those photos somewhere.”
Somewhere. On a phone, an old laptop, a flash drive in a kitchen drawer, or a cloud account nobody remembers the password to.
As a family photographer serving Ankeny and the greater Des Moines area for over 14 years, I’ve learned that a beautiful portrait session isn’t finished when the gallery is delivered. It’s finished when your portraits are on your wall or in your hands.
Why Digital Files Aren’t Enough
Recently, the mom of a senior came to me looking for photos of her daughter. She could find the albums and the prints, but she struggled to find the digital files or remember where she had saved them.
That story isn’t unusual. Here’s what I hear again and again:
A hard drive or flash drive corrupts and every file is gone.
Photos are scattered across cloud accounts, and no one knows which one holds what.
A phone is damaged or lost and the images were never backed up.
The files exist somewhere, but no one can find them when it matters most.
A family portrait session takes time, planning, and love. Those images deserve a better home than a USB drive.
The Photos That Matter Grow More Important Over Time
Think about the photos that matter most to you today.
They probably aren’t the ones buried in your camera roll. They’re the ones you can hold, flip through, or walk past in your hallway.
A friend of mine recently lost her mom. Going through her mom’s images brought back memories and made them come alive again. Nobody in that moment was searching for a folder on a hard drive. They wanted to see faces and remember.
If you’d like to read a story that moved me deeply, read about my friend Amy and the gallery wall her family finished after she was gone.
What Family Portrait Wall Art Does That a Gallery Link Can’t
Family portrait wall art turns a session into something you live with.
You see it when you walk in the door. Your kids grow up with their own faces and their family’s story on the wall. Guests ask about it. And the people you love stay present in your home long after session day.
An album does something different. It holds the whole story of a season, and it’s something you can pull off a shelf, pass around, and hand down.
Many families do both. A favorite image goes on the wall, and the album holds everything else.
How I Help Des Moines Area Families Go from Session to Wall
Most photographers stop at the files. I don’t. I want your portraits to end up in your home, so here is how the experience works.
Before the Session
We start with a consultation to plan the details.
I can help you hire a hair and makeup artist.
I coordinate clothing for the whole family, and I’ll even shop online or go through your closets with you.
Before You Order
I ask you to send me photos of the walls in your home. Then I design wall layouts so you can see what your portraits could look like in your actual space.
At your ordering appointment, we customize those designs with images from your session. Choosing size, spacing, and placement is so much easier when you can see it instead of guessing.
Delivery and Installation
I deliver and install your wall art myself. Too many beautiful prints sit in a closet because no one gets around to hanging them. I want yours up where you’ll see it every day.
You can learn more about the full process on The RVP Experience page.
A Story I Can’t Stop Thinking About: Jamie’s Storytelling Portrait Session
Sometimes a session becomes something far bigger than portraits.
For her 50th birthday, Jamie wanted to keep her parents’ stories alive, along with the story of her own childhood and life. Her parents have passed away. She had plenty of printed photos, but she wanted to capture the stories behind those images.
So she booked a Storytelling Portrait Session. It tells a person’s story in both video and print.
How It Came Together
We began with a Zoom call to talk through what she wanted to preserve. I then sent her a set of questions to help her decide which stories she wanted to tell.
My video team, Rorey Storr, and I interviewed her and recorded her answers and stories. We also captured behind-the-scenes footage.
Then I designed her portraits around her story:
A beautiful dress (Designed by Emmry Cloth) in the river, honoring her faith and being born again
Her home, surrounded by her past images, letters, and memorabilia
My studio, showcasing her journals and her expressions
What Jamie Took Home
Jamie ended up with three pieces:
A video sharing her parents’ stories
An album of images from her session, along with past photos of her, her family, her marriage, and her relationships
A framed family portrait
Each one does something different. Together they preserve her legacy in a form her family can watch, hold, and hang.

What to Do This Week, Even Before You Book
You don’t need a full Storytelling Portrait Session to start protecting your memories. Here’s what I’d encourage you to do:
Choose the photos you’d be heartbroken to lose and find out where they actually live.
Back them up in more than one place, and make sure you can open them.
Print the ones that matter most as prints or in an album.
Think about the story behind a favorite photo, and write it down or record it.
