Why Printed Photos Matter for Your Family Legacy | Des Moines Family Photographer

If you’ve ever wondered whether printing your photos really matters… this is why.

There are some people who leave an imprint so deep, so meaningful, that their presence continues to be felt long after they are gone. My dear friend Amy was one of those people.

Amy was only 49 years old when she was diagnosed with a tumor in her brain stem in July of 2024. In just a few short months, her life—and the lives of everyone who loved her—changed forever. On Christmas morning last year, a few months after her 50th birthday, she went home to be with Jesus.

And while her time here felt far too short, the impact she made is immeasurable.

A Life That Radiated Love and Faith

Amy had a way of making people feel seen.

Whether she was designing a space or simply sitting with you in conversation, she made you feel like you mattered. She loved Jesus deeply, cared for others effortlessly, and poured her heart into her family.

She didn’t just create beautiful spaces… she created meaningful ones.

A Des Moines Family Photography Story That Became Something More

About ten years ago, our paths crossed through a design project for her and her husband Eric’s dental practice here in Iowa.

Together, we created custom artwork that told a story, incorporating local history, meaningful places, and even antique dental tools transformed into fine art pieces displayed throughout their office.

But what stayed with me most wasn’t the artwork.

It was Amy.

She believed in my work before I fully believed in it myself. She reminded me that what I create as a family photographer in Des Moines and throughout Iowa isn’t just photography…

It’s legacy.

A Vision for a Family Photo Wall Gallery

Over the years, I photographed their family in 2018 and again in 2023.

Amy had a vision: to create a custom family photo wall gallery in their home that would grow over time and tell the story of their lives.

I can still picture her standing in her home, talking through where each piece would go, already thinking about how it would evolve as their family grew.

We began designing it together.

But when her health declined, everything paused.

She wanted to finish it… but her energy had to go toward fighting for her life.

Completing a Legacy Through Printed Family Photos

Months after Amy passed, Eric reached out to finish what she started.

What he didn’t know was that much of the gallery wall design had already been completed.

So together, along with my dear friend, Janel Campbell (Interior Designer who owns Gilded Haus Design), we brought her vision to life.

Now, that gallery wall holds:

  • Their wedding day

  • Their growing family

  • Their son’s wedding

  • A powerful image of Amy worshipping during her cancer journey

  • A tribute from their daughter’s wedding, where they honored Amy with blue hydrangeas

This is no longer just a gallery wall.

It’s the way her family continues to see her.
To remember her.
To feel close to her.

It is her legacy.

Why Printed Photos Matter More Than Ever

As a Des Moines family photographer serving Ankeny, West Des Moines, Ames, Pella, Iowa City, and beyond, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly life can change.

And one truth continues to stand out:

Printed photos matter.

Not someday.
Not eventually.
But now.

Because one day… they may be the very thing that brings comfort, connection, and healing.

If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s worth printing your photos or creating albums for your family…this is your answer.

The Healing Power of Family Photography

Eric chose one of his favorite portraits of him and Amy for his bedroom.

A daily reminder of love.
Of connection.
Of the life they built together.

As we sorted through albums, prints, flash drives, and years of memories, it became clear:

These images are not just photographs.

They are:

  • Moments preserved

  • Stories remembered

  • Love made visible

And in many ways, they have become part of his healing journey.

The Power of Community in Iowa

Eric recently shared their story on a local radio station, reflecting on Amy’s journey and life after her passing.

He spoke about something incredibly powerful—

How their community here in Iowa showed up.

Through meals.
Through prayers.
Through simply being present.

It’s a reminder that when we allow others in, we are never alone.

Creating a Home Filled with Family Legacy

The gallery walls we designed for their home are more than just décor.

They are:

  • Storytelling pieces

  • Heirloom artwork

  • Daily reminders of love and faith

These walls will hold their story for generations.

My hope is that every time they walk by these images, they feel her.

That they remember.
That they continue healing.

When a Story Deserves to Be Told in Their Own Words

Amy’s story lives on through images.

But it also makes me think about something even deeper—

The stories we never get to hear again once someone is gone.

The way they would tell it.
The details only they knew.
The faith that carried them through it all.

It’s the reason I began offering Storytelling Portrait Sessions.

Because sometimes, photographs are just the beginning.

Sometimes, a story deserves to be told in someone’s own voice—captured on video, preserved alongside images, and turned into something their family can return to again and again.

If Amy had been given more time, I know her story would have impacted even more people.

And that’s what this work is about.

Not just remembering someone…
But truly knowing them.
