When Should You Schedule Maternity Portraits and How to Incorporate Older Children

Preparing to welcome your new baby is such an exciting time. No matter if it’s your first or second, this is a special time for your family. If you’re expecting your first baby, I highly recommend you check out my other blog with nine must-have baby registry items.

If you’re here, you’re probably trying to figure out when you should take your maternity portraits. If this isn’t your first baby, maybe you’re curious if you should include your older children. I’m here to answer all of your questions and more. Let’s get started.

When Should You Schedule and Take Maternity Portraits

The best time to take your maternity portraits is between 30 and 36 weeks. Your bump will be perfect, and you’ll still have energy. Since the best time to take your maternity portraits is a relatively short window, I highly recommend reaching out to your maternity photographer as soon as you feel comfortable doing so.

My session schedule can fill up quickly, so it’s better to reach out sooner rather than later. If you’re reading this as you’re already into your second or third trimester, please don’t panic! Just send me a message, and we can schedule a time to chat.

Benefits of a Studio Maternity Portrait Session

These nine months of growing a human is such a sweet time, but it can come with its ups and downs. Pregnancy can come with discomfort, especially as you reach 30 weeks. It’s also normal not to feel your best. Your maternity portrait session is a great time to treat yourself to a trip to the salon. Having your hair and makeup done will help you feel beautiful and ready for the session.

There are a few reasons why a studio maternity session is perfect for an expecting mama. The studio is temperature-controlled and comfortable year-round. Once we’re settled in the studio, you won’t have to do a lot of walking around for your session.

How to Include Your Other Children in Your Maternity Session

If you have older children, we can include them in your maternity session. This is a big life change for them too. By including them in the session, they’ll get to celebrate the new baby and be part of the experience. Don’t worry about your small children or toddlers because they will do great during the session. As a mom of three, I know how to help your children warm up and have fun in front of the camera. Not only will they have fun being part of portraits with mom, but children also love being my helper! It will make the session feel extra special for them.

Children absolutely love seeing their mom at different ages and stages, especially during pregnancy. They are experiencing the anticipation of welcoming new life with you. By documenting this season of your family, you and your children will be able to look back on these images fondly for years to come.

Once your family arrives at the studio, I have everything you need. I want your whole family to feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the session. You’ll be so happy that you included them in your maternity session, and always look back on these portraits with a smile.
