Every spring feels like a new start, and this one feels especially joyful. For many, this new season brings tearful reunions as grandparents are finally able to safely see their families again! I love hearing stories and seeing social media posts with family photos after months apart due to COVID.

Many families relied on FaceTime and other technology to stay in touch. Now that we can be together again, it’s the perfect time to add to the family portrait artwork. As I shared previously, my most treasured photo of my grandparents is from their wedding day! I’m so grateful to have this printed photo to pass down from generation to generation.

It’s more important than ever to make sure we take the time to capture our generations during family photo sessions. I’ll share 5 tips for having a successful multi-generation family photo session.

5 Tips to a Successful Multi-Generation Family Photo Session

1. Schedule Early - This is not a session to put off! Schedule your portraits as soon as you can. Ensure you get the photographer you want along with your preferred season.

2. Find the Right Location - Is there a location that has special meaning to your family? I once took a multi-family portrait at a golf club because golf was important to them and they wanted to recreate photos from when the grandchildren were little. Maybe it’s not about the location for your family. Maybe it’s about a special piece of jewelry or accessory.

3. Choose Your Wardrobe - For this type of family portrait, I lean towards suggesting classic styles and colors while encouraging each person to feature something individual. Maybe it’s a piece of family heirloom jewelry like grandma’s pearls or a brooch that we can style with a scarf. It’s always important to share any stories like that with your photographer!

4. Share Any Stories - Tell your photographer any stories about your family that you feel comfortable sharing! If there’s an heirloom piece of jewelry, who gave it who and why? If your family loves to golf, share a memory of teaching your grandchild to play the game you love. The more the photographer knows, the more beautiful the portraits will turn out. You’ll be able to imagine where these will hang on your walls.

5. Print the Portraits Right Away - This is not a task to put off! These treasured multi-generations photos deserve to be hung as family artwork on the walls or printing in an album that will last forever. This is why I will assist you with printing them so you can enjoy them daily in your home.
