Multi generation family photos provide a fantastic way to record the legacy of your family and share the love you have for one another. While gathering 3 or 4 (sometimes even 5!) generations together might present some logistical challenges, the memories created from this type of extended family portrait session are priceless.
I have had the pleasure of photographing a number of multi generation families, and one of the things I love the most is hearing their stories. Whenever I gather at least one set of grandparents, their children and grandchildren, I’m sure to hear tales of how a couple first met, places they’ve lived and traveled to as a family and often, the antics of the children growing up. The history woven through the generations of any family is always a treasure and it is that history we aim to capture with multi generation family photos. In this recent multi generational session at Spring Creek Golf and Country Club, we even recreated some moments from a family photo shoot they had 10 years ago!
If your extended family lives nearby, scheduling a session is relatively simple. I will consult with you over the phone to discuss how many family members will be involved in the shoot, what the relationships and ages will be, what to wear and where the best location might be for the portraits. If your home holds special meaning for the family, that might be the perfect place for your photos. Likewise, there might be another location that your family has visited over the years that would work as well. Perhaps not everyone in the family lives in the area. If this is the case, consider scheduling a multi generation family photo session during a family reunion or holiday when all your family members will be in town.
It’s a busy world we live in, but taking the time to come together with the babies, children, teenagers and adults in your family for the purpose of family photos, will be a decision you could never regret.
